Based on the extensive research work in the field of surface engineerting of tools dr. Podgornik was invated to give an invited talk at the E-MRS 2015 international conference, one of the most important and the largest conference on materials. In his lecture he gave an overview of DLC and CrN hard coatings used for tools and machine parts. The review involved methods, tribological and mechanical properties, with the focus on the interactions between coating, lubricant and the formed material in different contact conditions.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1142186Invited by Prof. B. Smoljan from the Rijeka University, Faculty of mechanical and naval engineering, Dr. Podgornik prepared a lecture for PhD researchers, which included an overview of surface engineering techniques used for tools and dies, important properties influencing tool performance and their measurement and evaluation. Substrate properties selection from the preparation and microstructure point of view was also included.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1126570Patent describes modified tool steel heating process, which leads to reduced surface oxidation and decarburization. This improves steel quality and steel production efficiency.
F.33 Slovenian patent
COBISS.SI-ID: 1185450Developed application, including mathematical model for temperature and heat flux calculation, alows precise determination of temperature distribution during heating of Al-coils, which is based on the on-line measured data (Al-coils distribution, furnace temperatures, fans speed,...) provided by the industrial information system. Calculatiosn are done in real time and alow full temperature field analysis of each coil.
F.16 Improvements to an existing information system/databases
COBISS.SI-ID: 1172906Research in the field of hardness measurement and implementation of methods in the industrial environment showed that compared to experimental laboratory environment measurement uncertainty in industrial laboratories are from 50-100% higher, depending on the hardness level and surface preparation. Surface polishing reduces differences between inustrial and experimental environment, especially in the case of Vickers method, as well as hardness of the material. Harder the material smaller are the differences. Finally, for achieving acceptable measurement uncertainty at least 7 measurements need to be performed on each specimen.
