The contribution looks at the Czech community in Trieste in the period between 1848 and the First World War. Although a number of historians have already discussed the nationally heterogeneous structure of Trieste during the period of the Habsburg Monarchy the Czechs have always been relatively neglected. By examining archival documents, literature, and newspapers from that period the author focused on the role of the Czech community in the town of Trieste. Based on this case study, author analyzes the questions of citizens’ loyalty and ethnical affiliation, as well as how this notions reflect in changed state formations after the First World War. With the breakup of the empire, part of the homeland became the foreign country, to which various individuals adapted in various ways.

The contribution focuses on the issue of interethnic and intercultural violence in schools, the theme that has become more and more important in the last decades, especially because of the increased influx of migrants and consequently also higher ethnical diversity among the pupils. By inclusion of the children’s experiences, the article analyses the conditions in five European countries: United Kingdom, Cyprus, Slovenia, Italy and Austria. Empirical data confirm the thesis of cultural hybridization and transculturalism, as an ample phenomenon, ubiquitous in contemporary societies.

Employing evidence from local newspapers, archival and other materials, this contribution analyzes the consequences that the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand in 1914 had for the Austrian Littoral. The author focuses on reactions to the event in the city of Trieste, where the Great War resulted in radical change of borders in this area. He analyzes in detail how the corpses of Francis Ferdinand and his wife Sophie passed through Trieste, the course of mourning ceremonies, as well as protests and overt ethnic tensions days that followed the assassination and declaration a month later. Exploring these processes Klabjan stresses the relations complex relations between Austrian citizenship, loyalty to Habsburg dynasty, social class and national/ethnical affiliation among the local population.
