On the invitation of Croatian academy for science and art I was invited to contribute to the conference Ethnological and Folkloristic Research in Kvarner and Istra in the 19th and 20th century 11th-12th of October 2013. I presented the results of my podoctoral research with the emphasis on conflict memories on the so called Istrian exodus, which has still today devided the collective memories of three different nations - Slovenia, Croatia and Italy. This is reflected in the parallel views on the reasons and extension of this postwar emigrations of (mostly) Italians in the communities that live today in Istria: from the most affected members of Italian minority, to which all the social relations were broken with the exodus, which they felt as strangers in their own home after it and they were identified with fascists to other Istrians, which blame the political authorities and therefore the hostile atmosphere towards Italians, to the later migrants from Slovenia and ex-Yugoslavia, the majority of which did not experience the extension of exodus, but at their arrival they found themselves in empty towns, houses and without ties to the surroundings.
B.03 Paper at an international scientific conference
COBISS.SI-ID: 1536020420On the invitation of the Association of friends of the youth Slovenia the results of the project were presented orally to the teachers of history and mentors of the circles for history in the Slovenian elementary schools. Together with the others the contribution was published as a guidance and help by the research of the pupils. The emphasis was on the other side of the collective memory, for which there is no single word in the Slovenian school curriculum. Namely the Slovenian national memory is based on the concept of the hero’s fight against the hostile (Italian and German) occupier (and with him to the research of the monuments and events), but the negative aspect of it is censured and denied, when the winner became also the executioner. At the same time it was showed the impossibility to find one single historical truth, but on the same event a multivocality of conflicted memories exist.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1536171204The presentation of the paper with a colleague on the scientific conference of the Slovenian ethnological society discussed the continuity, inventions and conflicts of intangible heritage in Istria. The research of the previous project about the way of interpretation of calendar holidays in Istria was upgraded by the results of the postdoctoral research, where besides the continuities and folklorisms, the reflexions of power were studied. The intangible heritage was observed in the frame of the agency theory according to which the ritual reflects the relations of power in the community. It was analysed how the prohibition or the performance of certain holidays affected the Italians of Istria and how they divided the communities in Istria showing in this way the destructive powers of heritage and its role of the mediator of the social power.
