Understanding the meaning of cultural heritage in a contemporary world demands the reflection of its role in solving current political, cultural and economic problems. Research, preservation and presentation of the achievements of our predecessors can also be used to develop innovative economy and a creative society. However, local people must be aware of development potentials of cultural heritage and consequently realize them according to contemporary technological knowledge, needs and their own expectations. The purpose of this article is to present two good practices from the surroundings of Ljubljana and the Vipava valley about how to encourage and activate people in the countryside to recognize in cultural heritage activities the possibilities for establishing sustainable development of their building environment and the opportunities for encouraging creativity and personal pleasure.

This monograph deals with the role and meaning of heritage as cultural and economic capital, which is very important for actors in social communities. On the one hand its importance is seen as an identification element (symbol) in the construction, strengthening and representations of a collective identity, and on the other hand as a production and development category, which represents a basis for tourism development in the postmodern world. The empirical part of research is based in the Karst region, with an emphasis on the village communities in the Municipality of Komen. The author has analyzed social practices which create meanings and representation of cultural elements from the past, which experts, politicians, or local populations recognize as heritage for differing reasons, based on their different experiences, needs and expectations. The monograph particularly emphasizes that in researching and using cultural heritage special attention must be given to local residents, because they are the important users and creator of local cultural heritage and the main actors in changing local tradition. Because experts (museum staff, conservators, organizers of tourism development) lack a deeper understanding of the way of life of the local communities which manage the cultural element, and do not recognize the meanings which these elements embody, unnecessary misunderstandings arise and heritage fails to be activated in its social, economic or development category.
