The nanocrystalline TiO2 layer for a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is optically semi-transparent. Therefore, part of incident light passes through the cell and does not contribute to the current generation in DSSC. To achieve good light trapping within the cell, the layer has been improved by integration of spherical voids (using polystyrene particles) into the TiO2 layer, which act as efficient light scatterers in the visible light range. A series of ten different TiO2 layers have been examined and used to assemble DSSCs. The results revealed an improvement of DSSC efficiency for up to 21 % if the layer with the integrated polystyrene particles of diameter 200 nm was used.
