The number of neutrons released during the nuclear fusion is linearly proportional to the released energy. Because of that absolutely calibrated neutron detectors are used for power measurements in fusion reactors. The most recent measurements for direct calibration of JET neutron detectors were performed in April 2013 with a remote handling system that was used to carry and position a small 252Cf spontaneous fission source onto predetermined positions inside the tokamak. An important part of this thesis are the calculations that were performed to support the calibration of JET neutron detectors. Calculations have shown that most of the neutrons contributing to the fission chamber response come via ports that penetrate the vacuum vessel. Therefore any substantial object blocking the port significantly affects the detector response. We calculated correction factors that quantify the effect of the remote handling system on the neutron detector responses and analysed the uncertainties caused by the simplifications of the model and its material composition. Calculations show that the effect of the remote handling system on some positions is up to 30 % but the integral effect is only up to 5 %. Presented results are also important for ITER where detectors will be calibrated using similar methods.
