We have presented a method for modification of polymer surface that enables the selective protein adhesion and therefore its controlled interactions with surfaces. Plasma pretreatment presents an indispensable step for obtaining high yield of complex grafting of different coatings and we managed to obtain no or very low adsorption of protein with either PNIPAM/CTAB or PNIPAM/PEG(20) coatings at specific treatment conditions.

Improved biocompatibility of polyethylene was achieved by deposition of an anti-thrombogenic coating. Both pure chitosan thin film and chitosan/pectin multilayer was immobilized via polyacrylic acid (PAA) brushes grafted on the LDPE surface. The grafting was initiated by a low-temperature plasma treatment of the LDPE surface.

A new catalytic sensor for radical density measurement in CO2 plasmas was presented. A thorough theoretical model of the CO2 heterogeneous recombination was developed in order to determine the recombination coefficients involved. The optimal radical density was obtained at a moderate pressure of about 80 Pa showing that the afterglow of CO2 plasma is suitable for treatment of delicate materials.
