The names of inhabitants of the seven Slovenian (unofficial) regions are by origin and meaning very different, as well as by when, why and how they came into common usage. They are mostly based on former political-administrative units. The political denomination was for some time artificial and administrative, however, through time and in adequate circumstances it became the only (the case of Gorenjska) or prevailing (Dolenjska without its margins) name. Some regions’ names are more common in the popular usage, mostly due to particular practical needs.
