Throughout history, the Alpine environment presented man and his activities with specific problems and challenges, forging a unique relationship with him. In alpine environment a historical presence of characteristic – and especially collective – forms of natural resource management, combined with a relatively important presence of public authorities aiming to protect and preserve natural resources, but also to maintain a monopoly over them. The discussion addresses the aspect of natural resources as sources of energy, as well as means of sustenance and production. This is a subject that relates, on one hand, to the growing attention being paid to environmentally sustainable forms of exploitation and, on the other, to the social (as well as ethnicpolitical) dimension of the issue concerning the forms of management and rights to access natural resources, hence their social (and cultural) sustainability.
