We treated electrotechnical terminology from the point of view of lexicography and text. In the beginning we defined the terminology, general theory on terminology and users of terminology. Then the development of Slovene electrotechnical terminology was briefly described. In the chapter on terminological system, which includes concept and denominative systems of the domain, we first theoretically discussed the concepts and the concept system of the domain, then we continued with the terms and definitions. Next, the focus was put on the presentation of the terms in explanatory terminological dictionaries from the domain of electrical engineering (Slovene electrotechnical dictionary Slovenski elektrotehniški slovar (SES); dictionary of electricity market terms Slovar izrazov za trg z električno energijo; glossary of operation and maintenance of distributional electricity network and units Pojmovnik s področja obratovanja in vzdrževanja distribucijskega elektroenergetskega omrežja in postrojev; 3 glossaries from the domain of telecommunications by Pavel Meše, 3 online dictionaries: terminological dictionary of automatics Terminološki slovar avtomatike, glossary on concepts in photovoltaics Pojmi v fotovoltaiki, and glossary on concepts from the domain of telecommunications Nekateri pojmi s področja telekomunikacij) and engineering (general engineering dictionary Splošni tehniški slovar and Slovene engineering dictionary Slovenski tehniški slovar (A–B) (STS)).

The paper describes the gathering and preparing of material for a new Slovene legal terminology dictionary which shows the necessity of cooperation between field specialists and terminologists. The main principle is to collect modern and system based terminology, as distinct from terminological collocations and formulas, which can be described only by paraphrase or encyclopedic definitions.

Amongst the headwords in the Slovene Normative Guide 2001, approximately a tenth could be classified as terminological. A detailed treatment of the lexis labelled “pravn.” (“legal”) indicates that, in principle, terminological entries can be divided into groups including items ranging from fully-fledged terms to mere usage examples in individual fields. Some lexical items are not properly labelled (e.g., življenjsko zavarovanje), or the label “neobič.” (“rare”) can mislead the user into thinking that the term is inappropriate. In the design of a new normative guide, terminology should be given special attention, and consideration needs to be given to which terms should be included and which omitted. Those terms that have different meanings in different fields (e.g., indikacija, modifikacija) deserve special treatment. Attributing other social and functional varieties to the terms represented by foreign words can discourage a field specialist from using them, even though they may be common and used extensively in the particular field. Terminology and special use of terms can only be appropriately described in terminological databases and dictionaries, while general reference books ought to include lexis that is widely used (also beyond particular domains). The selection of this lexis must be determined by the corpora.

Stylistically marked words in terminological dictionaries remain a challenge because the authors of dictionaries tend to label terms which they feel are somehow marked and should therefore not be used without hesitation when writing scientific/technical texts, but it is difficult for those authors to state clearly how these terms are actually marked. The problem is not a conceptual one but rather a matter of expression, so there is a need to use appropriate labels.

In this paper, we analysed temporally marked terms in contemporary Slovene terminological dictionaries. We found that the labels starinsko, zgodovinsko, prej, nekdaj are not functional here because of their lack of informativeness. On the other hand, it is appropriate to use the label zastarelo, which directs the user from the recently outdated term to the contemporary one, and the use of notes that more precisely define the concept in relation to time and thus offer a reasonably complete definition.
