European society is increasingly aware of the need to reinforce intercultural dialogue. According to different sources including European White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue, intercultural dialogue is important for the future of European cultures and nations. Genuine dialogue can strengthen the awareness of a common identity among Europeans, revitalise national cultural identities and strengthen creativity achievements. In the contribution the intercultural dialogue is critically differentiated from postmodern relativism and fundamentalism and implications that the mentioned attitudes have in education are shown. Then, the outcomes of own empirical research on intercultural dialogue in the secondary education in Slovenia and some other European countries are presented. Apart from A level subjects curricula of grammar schools particular attention was paid to intercultural contacts brought about by ethnic minorities and migrations from ethnically and religiously different areas. Although at times it would seem that religion plays only a margin role in education, the research shows just the opposite. Religion is one of the foundation stones of cultural identity, reaches from everyday activities (food, dressing, festivals) to the issues linked to suffering, death. Religion is present as soon as there evolves more than just simple tolerance, and as soon as a contact that would reach the level of cultural identities is encouraged.
