COBISS.SI-ID: 35902509The first Slovene textbook for the teaching of Slovene as a mother tongue, entitled Piſmenoſt ali Gramatika sa Perve Shole (“Litteracy or Grammar Book for Elementary School”) was completed by Valentin Vodnik in 1811; however, due to unfavourable political and social circumstances in which the Slovene school system found itself in at the time, it remained grossly ignored – despite the important fact that this was the very first grammar book to have been written in the so-called meta-language. For the first time, Slovene grammar terminology was systematically articulated; the book also offered a detailed account of tonemic accent, basic rules of word formation in Slovene, as well as the basics of Slovene syntax. The abridged version with a slightly modified title Vodnikova krajnska pismenost okrajšana za male šole (“Carniolan Litteracy by Vodnik, abridged edition for Grammar Schools”) was only printed as late as 1847 in Trieste and then again with slight modifications in 1854. It was adapted by the Catholic priest, linguist, lexicographer and historian of the Primorska region, Štefan Kociančič. He accepted Vodnik’s professional terminology (some of which is still in use today); however, in the 1854 edition, he coined some new forms as the prevalent version in the morphological paradigms (1850) which were more typical of the standard uniform Slovene language evolving in the mid- 19th century. The adaptation by Kociančič from 1854 was therefore normative in the entry level language teaching in the western Slovene national regions.
