The paper presents a critical overview of the strategies and measures used in drug abuse prevention. On the declaratory level, drug prevention activities in Slovenia are mostly in line with the EU guidelines. In practice one can discover some discrepancies, predominantly due to the fact that we do not have a national database of programmes and that there are not any programme evaluations; therefore, schools are left to their own judgement in choosing which programme is suitable for them.

The article explores the impact of the social construction of gender in psychiatric medical systems internationally and in Slovenia. A special emphasis is on the medical diagnosis depression which is seen as the “women's illness” and it questions its diagnostic and social validity.
