The analysis of informally obtained knowledge about liquid crystals in the population of the first year students at the Facutly of Education is presented.

The anisotropic structure of wood is used for models of liquid crystalline strutures. Models are used for the analysis of their optical properties in the microwave range. Wood models present isotropic, nematic iand holesteric liquid crystals and allow for compariosn of optical properties of wood and liquid crystals.
