Scientific board of the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS) recognized our development of the first transgenic animal (knockout mouse) model in Slovenia as an exceptional achievement of Slovenian science in 2011 in the field of biosciences. As the leader of this project I presented this achievement on 17. January 2013 at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Presentation was geared also towards lay audience to promote scientific achivement in public and is available at the Videolectures web site at: http://videolectures.net/znanstveni_dosezki2011_horvat_mis/
E.01 National awards
COBISS.SI-ID: 3201416Zois award was awarded to the PI for his exceptional achievements in the area of genetics in the last seven years. Three publications as a result of this ARRS grant contributed significantly towards strengthening my bibliography.

In the period between 2008-2014, I was the main coordinator and initiator to establish infrastructure for embryonic stem cell research and animal transgenesis. Importance of this field of research is exemplified by the 2009 year's Nobel Prize awardees for Medicine (professors Evans, Cappechi, Smithies), who invented and developed these methods to allow in vivo studies of gene function. In Slovenia, we so far have not yet had a centre or a laboratory where researchers could perform experiments on mouse embryonic stem cells or develop their own transgenic mouse models. Our laboratory now offers opportunity for Slovenian research community and interested industry to perform such experiments at home. Apart from establishing necessary infrastructure, we already managed to develop the first conditional transgenic knockout animal in Slovenia. This result confirms that we are now equipped and have all the expertise necessary to lead experiments in this rather difficult field of animal biotechnology.
