Dr. Marko Petek was part of the entrepreneur team that won the third prize in the competition for the Chancellor's prize of University of Ljubljana in 2012. Business plan authors fror three Slovenian research institutions combine complementary knowledge for production of custom multifunctional magnetic nanoparticles that will be marketed to researchers working in the field of biomedicine and nanotechnology. That way they will promote the transfer of knowledge from academics to business and at the same time participate in new research and development breakthroughs.
F.05 Ability to launch new technological development cycle
Project group has presented their research at the international Plant Fascination Day that was organized worldwide on May 18th by the European Plant Science Organization. The event took place in Ljubljana Botanical garden. 39 countries participated in event, 29 from Europe, others from North and South America, Africa, Australia and New Zeland. The main organiser of the event in Slovenia was Slovene plant biology society, with participation of 12 other organisation, including NIB.
F.18 Transfer of new know-how to direct users (seminars, fora, conferences)
We have discovered and tested a new, natural insecticide for crop protection, which originates from edible mushroom and can be produced in larger quantities by different biotechnological production systems. This insecticide has been successfully used for protection of potato against Colorado potato beetle, which is one of potato’s major pests. This natural insecticide is a protease inhibitor, which its inhibitory effect on digestive system of certain insects and causes their death when consumed. We are proposing two possible ways of use – production of this protein within transgenic plants or as a form of contact insecticide. In our experiments we developed and tested both, and proved efficient plant protection in both systems.
