An overview of protease inhibition in cancer treatment was given with the emphasis on cysteine proteases. The results demonstrating that cysteine cathepsins could be target for tumor treatment; however, the use of efficient drug delivery systems could be beneficial for improving the therapeutic index. Thus, the notion that regulation of proteases activity in pathological conditions is critical in many pathological conditions including tumor progression was also presented.

COBISS.SI-ID: 25513255A discussion on the role of endogenous cysteine cathepsins inhibitors, as stefin B and cystatin C, have been presented. Moreover, the possible impacts of both inhibitors at different stages of cancer progression and metastasis has been proposed. The results of inhibition of tumor growth upon depletion of stefin B in transgenic mouse mammary cancer model have been also presented.
