At the annual meeting of European Society for Clinical Virology we have presented our results on basic research project. A case-control study was described in which more than one third of gastroenteritis in children with unknown etiology was trying to be explained for the first time. Partial results obtained showed that some of bacterial pathogens were underestimated in cases of gastroenteritis and some viral causes of gastroenteritis not included in the routine diagnostics of gastroenteritis were responsible for the diagnostic gap. Using a general approach, the diagnostic gap was reduced to as low as 9%. Our results are an important contribution to improving diagnostics of gastroenteritis, suggesting a modern, syndromic approach to diagnostics of infectious diseases.

COBISS.SI-ID: 30329817At the international conference on noroviruses our group presented results of the detection of noroviruses in mussels from harvesting area in Slovenia coast region. Using appropriate concentration technique for virus concentration from mussel tissue noroviruses were efficiently detected with molecular methods. It was shown that norovirus RNA detected in mussels was closely related to those, circulating currently in human population and surface waters. The results shown in this study contributed an important part of information about norovirus circulation in nature.

COBISS.SI-ID: 512276793In the study, presented at the international conference on Food and Environmental Virology in Lisbon, a new tool for virus removing from wastewater was evaluated and described. New technique was developed using CIM monoliths, which were already shown as efficient tool for concentrating viruses from water samples. However, CIM monoliths showed promising results for the use in virus removal from wastewater treatment plant effluent, which consequently lower the possibility of surface water contamination.
