Patient derived glioblastoma (GBM) stem-like cells (GSCs) represent a valuable model for basic and therapeuitc research. GSCs are usually propagated in serum-free Neural Basal medium supplemented with bFGF and EGF. It was suggested that GSCs with amplified EGFR should be cultured without EGF, as this induces loss of EGFR amplification. We demonstrated that even GSCs without EGFR amplification could be cultured with bFGF only, as the addition of EGF had no effect on them. This importantly solved a dispute emerging from how GBM biopsies should be cultured before their genomic profile analysis.

The review describes stem cells in one of most actively investigated tumours - glioma, the most common brain tumour in adults. Here we have focused on glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). The invasive cell phenotype and high resistance to therapy represents the major obstacle for successful therapy. This is presumably due to the presence of GBM stem cells, (GSC), described in details in the first part of review. Other type of stem cells, associated with tumours and comprising tumour micro-environment are infiltrating mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Their role and differentiation pathways in the tumour niches are the subject of intensive investigations. Unravelling the mechanisms underlying MSC-mediated modulation of tumour behaviour via paracrine and direct interactions with GBM and GSC cells may solve the dispute of their anti-malignant activity, which is currently contradictory to the hypothesis of possible mesenchymal origin of GBM stem cells

Introductory lecture on ISS Piran (International Summer School Piran) 2013 International Summer School (ISS) on the theme of modern approaches in research and treatment of cancer was the 6th in a row of international ISS-Piran. This one was carried under the leadership of Prof. Tamara Lahr Turnšek at the Marine Biology Station of the National Institute of Biology in collaboration with the Society for Tissue Engineering of Slovenia. It was organised as a postgraduate school for the students of Biomedicine at Medical Faculty of UL (5 ETC), but was also attended to attract students of biosciences and similar fields of natural sciences as well as for all others willing to gain the knowledge and experiences in oncology. The subjects included tumour biology, tumour biomarkers and targets, cancer and stem cells and translational research in he filed of caner in the mornings as lectures and as hands on practical approach in excremental oncology n the afternoon. On the last day the participants took written exams and presented their related projects. We prepared the book of abstract from the abstracts that was printed in the edition of NIB
