The paper is based on a qualitative analysis of 22 in-depth interviews and a focus group, and mainly deals with the importance of social capital for independent inventors to overcome the barriers stemming from their marginalized position and the absence of any organizational resources, which are for example available for innovators in companies. The authors have tackled these issues in terms of gender differences. The key finding is that independent inventors have difficult access to civilsociety structures and professional associations, which are a major source of structural and individual social capital.
