In our paper we analyze the issue of political influence on effective corporategovernance in big and medium sized Slovene firms. Based on dataset ofsupervisory board structure and balance sheets data in the period of 2000-2010we identify impact of potential harmfull practice of appointing supervisoryboard members based on rather political than professional consideration. Each particular member of Supervisory Board has been checked for his/her politicalactivity in the past. The core contribution of our study is to present the negative effect of “unusual” appointment of Supervisory Board members based rather onpolitical consideration then professional achievements.

Paper contributes to the debate on the importance of education for sustainable economic growth. Following recent contribution by Aghion (2009) we focus on the role of tertiary education for innovation activity at the firm level using patent applications as a proxy. Instead of spending for tertiary education or share of population with tertiary education we present Aghion index that measures the quality of tertiaryeducation. Moreover, as innovations are only the first step in the value chain at the firm level, we complement data on quality of tertiary education withfirm level data on human capital spending in big and medium sized Slovene firms. We report that not only sound educational system but also on-the-jobtraining is important for firm-level innovations and inventions. Firms with more on-the-job training reported significantly higher number of patents in the period of 2007-2009.
