The aims of the conference at the 70th anniversary of the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, which took place in Ljubljana between 25 and 27 November 2010, were to stimulate a discussion on various aspects of essentialism, foreground a critique of methodological nationalism, and direct 21st century anthropology towards a quest for and reflection upon alternative paradigms. As part of the conference, I organised a workshop on applicative anthropology, where I also presented my current research.

The town’s ‘festival fabric’ is at present heterogeneously composed, containing both locally and non-locally organised festivals. As such it forms a balanced composition, which is less vulnerable to economic crisis, such is the present one. The concept of ‘production of locality’ proposed by Arjun Appadurai is employed to speak of the importance of locally organised festivals, which drive more on local identity than on profit, and are therefore in the times of economic crisis less exposed to financial uncertainty as the mass commercial events.
