The retention of α-tocopherol in plasma and muscles reflects the supplementing regimen. Concentrations of γ-tocopherol were much lower and only slightly elevated compared to α-tocopherol. Lipid stability of breast muscle was improved by α-tocopherol and its combination with γ-toc, while in thigh only α-tocopherol was efficient. These results are indicating that susceptibility to lipid oxidation can be prevented by α-tocopherol, but not by feeding the same amount of γ-tocopherol. Feeding the combination is as effective as feeding α-tocopherol alone, despite that only half of dose of α-tocopherol was used.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3094408Vitamin E in the form of α-tocopherol is added to feed due to its antioxidant properties, while γ-tocopherol is prevalent in feed intended for chicken nutrition. α-Tocopherol and its combination with γ-tocopherol were effective in the prevention of lipid oxidation, γ-tocopherol did not possess such properties because of its poor retention in the organism. The addition of vitamin E affected the expression of genes, mostly those that are involved in lipid and cholesterol metabolism and those which are important in the presence of oxidative stress.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3140232We presented the results of the study which was conducted in order to investigate the effect of different sources of fat on lipid metabolism in broiler chickens. Lipid oxidation was higher in the group fed linseed oil and vitamin E concentrations were higher in the group fed palm fat. No differences in plasma triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations were observed. Liver fatty acid composition matched the fatty acid composition of the diets. This was reflected in the changes of liver transcriptome with genes in lipid, cholesterol and oxidative stress pathway being differentially expressed.
