In this paper, seasonal changes in the magnitude of atmospheric mercury deposition and its distribution in the wider Idrija area are discussed. Moreover, results of mercury speciation in air are presented, based on which future fate of atmospheric Hg on the regional and global level can be assumed. In addition, geochemical maps of mercury atmospheric distribution over the town of Idrija are shown. In the next phase of the project, these maps will be used for the delineation of major terrestrial hot spots of mercury.

Based on the empirical correlation between the mercury emission flux from contaminated surfaces and the influencing parameters (soil Hg content, temperature, solar radiation, soil moisture) GIS mercury emission model was developed for the Idrijca River catchment. Results of this spatially designed model will serve as basis for selection of suitable remediation technologies and environmental scenarios design.
