In the Hg mine Idrija, many elements (mostly iron and sulphate) exceed permissible concentration limits in the groundwater in the time of pumping. High concentrations occur due to oxidation of pyrite and sulphides, which cause the carbonate dissolution. The calculated saturation indices show the water to be oversaturated with hematite and goethite, and the deposited minerals in the pipes confirm such calculations. According to geochemical analyses, further geochemical problems are expected, but the element concentrations can be predicted.

COBISS.SI-ID: 850782The study material is intended for the exercises with programs PHREEQC for Windows and Aquachem for modeling of geochemical processes at the subject Geochemistry, in the Bachelor degree study of Geology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering at University of Ljubljana. The computer exercises comprise from 2010 on selected examples of data from the project and are complementary to the lectures of Geochemistry, where the results of geochemical analyses and their interpretations are also mentioned. The project is therefore becoming increasingly integrated into the pedagogic work.
