This work presents the optimization models for heat and energy integration of an industrial beverage plant. Optimal heat matches between batch process operations are determined by using these models. The feasibility of the combined electricity production, heating and cooling was studied, and the optimum polygeneration system was identified. The company could decrease the steam and electricity costs by implementing the proposed solutions. A steam surplus could be sold to the outside consumers, thus increasing the energy efficiency and profitability of the plant.

The paper is based on the results of international project entitled Towards Sustainable Sugar Industry in Europe (TOSSIE). 33 research important topics to the sugar sector are described. Most topics are compatible with the research themes included in the in the COOPERATION part of the 7th Framework Program of the EU 2007–2013. The list of topics is divided into four parts and can be used by policy- and decision-makers interested in sugarbeet sector. The description of each research topic can be used as a starting point in setting up a research project or other R&D activities.
