Through the analysis of the narratives of the former Yugoslavs about their army experience, the chapter deals with normality and the ways it is negotiated from a twofold perspective. First, it aims to explore how the former Yugoslav men negotiate their identity of the JNA soldiers in the realm between institutionally set norms and subversive strategies that challenge or ridicule these norms. The second perspective treats narratives on the JNA service as a memory practice, taking into account the present day positioning of the JNA memories.
