In order to ensure linguistic rights as fundamental rights and equal treatment of all before the law as well as in other social spheres, translation and interpreting are becoming a necessity; the regulation of this professional area, which is defined by a society’s socially weakest members, is indicative of the level of democracy in a society. Slovenian linguistic situation is presented from the perspective of the need to ensure translation and interpreting primarily in public and healthcare institutions, and the plans to regulate these professions in Slovenian society.

Contemporary methodological approaches are presented within translation studies, currently still combining both translation and interpreting research. Special attention is paid to translation and interpreting in the modern society, which is distinctly characterised by multilingualism and multiculturalism. In interpreting, this lately resulted in forming of a research field on community interpreting, and on health care interpreting as one of its parts.
