The authors present the results of archaeological research at Kreljeva 1 in Koper, which revealed valuable information for the reconstruction of the town's genesis. Archaeological layers have revealed the remains of the late antique and medieval settlement. Picture of the permanent settlement, the local production and the relationship with the wider Italian space is complemented by numerous finds of modern ceramics. At the same time research into the Capuchin garden and the palace Baseggio Kreljeva at 6, the results of excavations at Kreljeva 1 help create an image of the urban morphology of Koper.

In the scientific paper dealing with the topic of urban archaeology of Koper the author has presented main traces of the town's history, history of research and published results. She has pointed out that town’s history is based on the archival sources and the ongoing analysis of the still standing architecture and is not supported by the archaeology. She has presented the ongoing project with the main goal of the evaluation and publication of the material culture as the basis for answering main questions concerning town’s establishment, development phases and chronology.

In this paper, with the help of archival sources, the author tried to reconstruct the architectural and urban context in which the architect Mihevc worked, the first interventions in the city of Koper and in particular from 1957 onwards regarding the preparation of a restoration plan for the old and building of new Koper. Through archival documents she has presented genesis of some new parts of the old town. The article presents the unknown - forgotten or disregarded - circumstances that have defined the basic major events in the postwar years in northern Istria. The article is primarily a record of interventions in the space that have accompanied and had a crucial role in shaping the identity of the urban area of northern Istria and thus provide a foundation for collective memory and identity of the local population.
