The international scientific conference titled Več glav več ve. Frazeologija in paremiologija v slovarju in vsakdanji rabi / Zwei Köpfe wissen mehr als einer. Phraseologie und Parömiologie im Wörterbuch und Alltag / Two Heads are Better Than One. Phraseology and Paremiology in Dictionaries and in Everyday Use took place in Maribor and Ljubljana between 18 and 19 April 2013 and was organised by the Department of German Studies at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Maribor and the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology SRC SASA Ljubljana. The two-day event was directly connected with two national research projects, which were financially supported by the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS) between the years of 2010 and 2013. Both projects are concerned with the field of phraseology and paremiology. The project titled Phraseology of the German language: Slovenian-German Comparative and Intercultural Perspectives, (J6-3601, headed by Vida Jesenšek) was undertaken at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Maribor, while the project Slovenian Proverbs as Cultural Heritage: Classification and Corpus Editing (J6-3600, headed by Marija Stanonik) was undertaken at the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology of the Scientific Research Centre at the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SRC SASA). Due to the relatedness of the topics and the currentness of the project work, it made sense to organise a joint scientific event, to which the respective organisers invited esteemed domestic and foreign experts (36 from Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Denmark, Spain and Slovakia). The participants acquainted themselves with the content and the progress of the projects and in turn presented the findings of their own related research endeavours. The collaborative organization of the international scientific conference brought added value to the Slovene scientific environment and enabled a direct and efficient inclusion of Slovene research conducted in the fields of German linguistics, Slovene linguistics and ethnology into the international research sphere. In addition, the conference enabled accesses to new knowledge and represented a platform for connecting and creating synergies between different areas of research. COBISS.SI-ID: 262622208This volume presents an impressive picture of the close relationship between language and culture as these manifest themselves in phraseology. The articles compiled in it are a testimony to the great relevance of interlingual and intercultural studies in phraseology research. They deal with as many as 18 different languages: Armenian, Basque, Croatian, Czech, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Slovene, Turkish, and a number of Slovene and Croatian dialects. The contributions focus on individual phraseological units or special groups of them from a contrastive point of view. The first group of articles gives a general introduction to phraseology as a culture-specific phenomenon and deals with the way idioms express the worldview of a nation. Another group of articles includes case studies on individual phraseological units or subtypes of units, like f.i. the comparison of PUs with specific lexemes in two or more languages, the contrastive analysis of PUs from the same semantic field, case studies of individual idioms from a linguocultural perspective. Translatological aspects are the focus of a third group of articles, that deal with phenomena like phraseological gaps, calquing and borrowing, with the translation of PUs with special elements (like colour terms, flavours, ethnonyms, proper names) into various languages and the question of equivalence. Finally there is a subgroup of articles that deal specifically with somatisms, i.e. PUs including designations of the human body, that tend to be highly idiomatic structures, which makes them a challenge for human translation aswell as a source of many translation errors for any automatic system.
