Principal investigator of this project, Prof. I.Musevic, was invited by Professor Randall Kamien of the University of Pensylvania to participate the international workshop entitled »Knotted Fields«, which was organized by the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California Santa Barbara, USA. The worksop lasted for nearly one month and was financed by Kavli Foundation. The workshop was attended by approximatelly 30 scientists from the fields of mathematics and physics. Most of the participants were either matematicians or theoretical physicists dealing with topology and working on open topological problems in optics and soft matter. There was only a small number of experimental physicists participating, because the topology is only slowly being explored experimentally. In an invited lecture Prof. Musevic has presented the talk entitled Topology and Liquid Crystal Colloids, stressing not only fundamental problems in liquid crystal topology but also pointing to future applications of topology in soft matter photonics.

COBISS.SI-ID: 2451300We have been awarded Slovenian national patent on 3D microlaser based on cholesteric liquid crystal in a microdroplet, I.Muševič, M. Humar, Kroglasti tekočekristalni laser : patent 23567A. Ljubljana: Urad RS za intelektualno lastnino, 31. maj 2012. The microlaser is based on dispersing cholesteric liquid crystal in an immiscible carrier fluid, which leads to spontaneous formation of LC microdroplets with internal photonic structure of the Bragg-onion type. The microlaser is a dye pulsed laser, which is excited optically and emits light omnidirectionally. In 2012 we have received positive report of the European Patent Office regarding the patentability of our PCT/EP2011/005607 application of 3D microlaser. The report is positive and in 2013 we are entering the national phases of patent application in 6 selected countries worldwide.

COBISS.SI-ID: 24447015Invited lecture entitled »Samoorganizacija fotonskih kristalov, mikrolaserjev in metamaterialov« was presented at the international workshop on optical communications entitled "19. Strokovni seminar Optične komunikacije", organized by the Faculty of Electronics at the University of Ljubljana, held in Ljubljana. The 3-day workshop started on the 1st February 2012 and was attended by nearly one hundred international participants specialized in optics, electronics and computer science. Out of 30 lectures, 4 were presented in English language. The speakers have presented and discussed most recent achievements in the field of broad-band optical communication technology including future development in this field. We have presented our soft-matter approach to all-optic photonics based on self-organized soft matter systems, which represents a new direction in this field.
