Especially on the farms in hilly and remote parts of Slovenia, the issue of succession is of special concern and also poses a threat to providing social security to the elderly. When a farm is handed down to an heir, the heir assumes not only physical and human capital, but by tradition also a legal obligation to provide the former owner and his partner with accommodation, food, and care. The role and importance of owners’ perceptions in preserving intergenerational continuity on Slovenian mountain farms are studied.
