Scientific development, and technological innovations in particular, open up new opportunities and ways for the functionally impaired to overcome structural and communication obstacles. Modern information and communication technology enables them to depend less on others’ help, to be included in the “normal” life of other people, and to feel safer and more independent. Because the elderly are also classified among the functionally impaired along with the disabled, the findings presented and analyzed in the first part of this research paper are also significant for the postdoctoral project.

Especially on the farms in hilly and remote parts of Slovenia, the issue of succession is of special concern and also poses a threat to providing social security to the elderly. When a farm is handed down to an heir, the heir assumes not only physical and human capital, but by tradition also a legal obligation to provide the former owner and his partner with accommodation, food, and care.
