The paper enlightens some of the most important design, hydraulic, ecologic and economic advantages of the compact vertical axial turbine called the Saxo turbine. Special attention is drawn on description of the Saxo turbine, its main differences comparing to tubular and Kaplan turbines and some unique solutions applied during development. The comparison is supported with model tests, experiences on prototypes and theoretical and numerical investigations of the flow field in entire water passage.

COBISS.SI-ID: 11748635The paper reports and discusses accidental simultaneous closure of a two automatic control valves during initial testing of a large-scale pipeline test rig at Deltares, Delft, The Netherlands. The simultaneous closure of both valves has induced upsurge and downsurge at the same time. Large water hammer and column separation have caused failure of pipe supports and leakage at pipe joints. The incident was caused by a fault in an electronic conversion box due to power failure. The accidental transient event has been fully recorded with pressures, flow rates, water levels and photographies.
