We are first to demonstrate experimentally that combination of mili- and nano-second electric pulses inactivate 1-log more bacteria in comparison to classical electrical inactivation with the same energy. Energy efficient inactivation of bacteria is of potential interest in water treatment and non-thermal pasteurization of food.

COBISS.SI-ID: 8634708In the last fourteen years we have developed more than ten prototype devices for electropermeabilization and even more electrodes or chambers with the electrodes. On international scientific workshop and postgraduate course Electroporation based technologies and treatments we have presented our and other work on electropermeabilization devices and electrodes.

COBISS.SI-ID: 8822612We modeled and simulated in SPICE the diode opening switch generators for intracellular membrane permeabilization. To compare the models with real circuits, we have chosen two diode opening switch generators from the literature, one that utilizes linear aircore inductors and another that utilizes saturable magnetic core in their pulse forming network. The results obtained by SPICE simulation are in good agreement with the previously published measurements of real circuits. Our models of electrical elements are thus sufficient to study, analyse or design new diode opening switch generators.

COBISS.SI-ID: 7920212We designed a user-friendly Graphical User Interface to control the high-voltage pulse generator. Since safety is an important issue in biomedical engineering, a comprehensive quality assessment was made involving thoroughly testing all the input parameters (i.e. software handlers for on-screen controls) of the Graphical User Interface software with black-box methods, using the test-case design approach, and with white-box methods, using the code-inspection approach. Several minor and major errors were found and eliminated in the development phase, thus resulting in a safe operation of the developed biomedical pulse generator.

COBISS.SI-ID: 8853588We reviewed the concepts of electropermeabilization pulse generation which are used to design prototype and commercial electropermeabilization devices. We presented their advantages and disadvantages and most appropriate applications. The review will help researchers to select the most appropriate prototype or commercial electropermeabilization device for their application.
