Occupational exposure on broadcasting masts often exceeds the action values of Directive 2004/40/EC. To analyze the actual situation, detailed measurements were performed. Measured values of the electric field exceed the action values by a factor of 10. The whole mast with antennas, steel construction, and a human model placed at different heights were included in the numerical model. The measured SAR shows that the action values of Directive 2004/40/EC are very conservative for near field exposure to the FM, as even when they are exceeded by a factor of 10, exposure limits are not exceeded.

Pregnant women are members of a particularly sensitive group of workers and their exposure to EMFs should be carefully monitored. To this end, we have used a model of a pregnant women to compute the exposure of mother and fetus to EMFs at 900, 2170 and 2450 MHz at 12 different orientations of the incident field and have determined the maximum and minumum values of exposure for the mother and fetus, as well as the average exposure of the fetus. We have determined the maximum localized SAR and the whole-body SAR in the mother and average SAR in the fetus.
