The important sources of occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) in the frequency range from 0 to 300 GHz are presented with respect to the criteria of the Directive 2004/40/ES. The introduction summarizes the mechanisms of interaction of EMF with the human body. Next, the most significant EMF sources and effects of static, low-frequency and high-frequency EMF are presented in turn. For each frequency range, the most critical workplaces are identified, with actual values of dosimetric quantities compared to the exposure limits defined by Directive 2004/40/ES.

COBISS.SI-ID: 8096340Most employers will be minimally influenced by the requirements of Directive 2004/40/EC, but there are exceptions. One is broadcasting, with high exposures close to the broadcasting towers. We measured the EMF on different such locations. Directly on the towers, exposures can exceed the action values defined in directive 2004/40/EC for up to 100 times, but they rapidly decrease with distance. The results show to the specialist public that the analysis of the exposure in close proximity of the large EMF sources greatly depends both on the source of the EMF as well as the exposure situation.
