J. Pirjevec analysed the topic of memorials in the area of Trieste that underwent a metamorphosis at least twice during the last 2 cent. 1st it was transformed from a remote seaside town to a cosmopolitan metropolis, then, after WW1, it tried to steer clear of its multiculturalism and become “the most Italian of cities”. The 2nd transformation made victims of the Slovenes, but also of the Italians who became entrapped inside their ethnical exclusiveness. This lead to tensions and tragedies which are symbolised by the “foiba” and the memorial in honour of 4 executed hostages: both in Bazovica.

Bajc addressed the complex question of the so called foibas against the background of the political violence taking place in Julian March and in Yugoslavia after WW2. He demostrated how a series of conflicts among social classes as well as within and among nations found their expression and how they were characterised by the ideology of the revolutionary seizing of power by the winners – the Yugoslav communist authorities - on one hand and by their violence towards the defeated on the other hand.
