The presentation of the difficulties of defining the childhood and children in the cultural and historical studies is followed by the presentation of different positions of children in the migration process and the decisions about it. Each position is illustrated by examples from the research projects, based on auto/biographical sources and narrative descriptions of subjective migration experience.

The author discusses various aspects of childhood and impacts on childhood as they are mirrored in literary works written by sixty Slovenian émigré writers. She is interested in various experiences of immigrant children within and outside their families in different historical periods of Slovenian emigration as they are expressed in literary works, and tries to examine how the memory that the parents created influenced their children’s cultural identity and world views as well as the typical features of the generation gap in migrant context.
