The paper discusses confraternities that were active in Ljubljana from the late 16th century until 1783. The increase in their number is seen from the lists compiled by their contemporaries and from the reports that were sent to Rome by the bishops of Ljubljana. From the point of view of art-commissions and iconography and based on literary sources and material relics the Jesuit congregations are discussed. The study presents also their festive decorations during titular feasts and annual processions.

The paper deals with the worship and artistic presentations of St. Joseph at the Barefooted Augustinians’ in Ljubljana as well as with art commissions placed by the there existing St. Joseph’ Confraternity. The article also presents public monuments of the Saint and several images of him from other churches in the city, where, however, St. Joseph’s cult only played a secondary role. By including a brief summary of three sermons from the 17th century the article tries to shed light upon the role of St. Joseph as the universal patron-saint of Carniola and other Habsburg provinces.
