The paper comprehensively deals with the patron saints of the city of Ljubljana, the Ljubljana diocese and the Province of Carniola, discussing the history of their worship and patronage as well as their visual presentations or iconographic questions. The selected patron saints represent the entire Carniola, which in the time discussed reached also to the Kras (Karst) area and deep into Istria. In the time of Baroque, Ljubljana, as the capital of Carniola, proves to be a centre of influence for the art of a wider territory, not only in terms of formal questions but also contents.

The paper presents the newly discovered, in art history yet unregistered, painting of St. Martina in the archbishop's palace in Ljubljana. It proves the high cultural level of quality of art collecting in the Slovene metropolis. The picture was executed by Pietro Berrettini da Cortona, one of the leading masters of Baroque art in Rome. The published research result expanded the hitherto known oeuvre by the artist and thus contributed also to European art history.
