As forestry machinery is becoming heavier and more powerful it also has more damaging effect on forest soils, mainly through soil compaction. Apart from immediate damage, made by machines on roots, compacted soil cut off neighbouring plant roots from water, nutrient and air supplies and thus cause stress. We present impacts of heavy machinery on root growth studied with minirhizotrons.

We have analysed ectomycorrhizal community in beech dominated forest stands. Several new types were discovered and briefly described. Based on ectomycorrhizal type abundance, we have calculated the (static)content of total carbon in each of the type. Quantities of carbon stored in ectomycorrhizae were compared with modelled quantities of total carbon in forest soils.
