The protective role of forests is well recognized in the world as well as in Slovenia. Its importance is increasing as a result of recent catastrophic events. The detailed analysis of protection forests has not been carried out yet. In the article orographic, vegetation and stand characteristics of the protective forests are presented, and management of protection forests in Switzerland as an example of an active approach for improving the protective effects of forest against different natural hazards is described. Some suggestions for improving forest management in Slovenia are presented

COBISS.SI-ID: 32472621Presented silvicultural measures are based on the natural hazard assessment, forest type (site and stand characteristics) and evaluation of actual endangerment of infrastructural objects. Such assessment enables more rational decisions regarding (non)management and detailed silvicultural planning. Silvicultural plan should incorporate elements such as type of measures (cutting, cutting and logging and nonintervention), mode of measures (technological aspect), long-term spatiotemporal measure dynamics and comprehensive cost- benefit assessment.
