Cardiovascular disease accounts for more than 50% of deaths among persons with end stage renal disease (ESRD). Atherosclerosis and vascular calcifications are also the consequence of non-traditional risk factors in haemodialysis patients. These are duration of haemodialysis treatment, serum calcium and phosphate, CaXP product, secundary hyperparathyroidism. Pathogenic mehanism of cardiovascular calcifications in patients with chronic renal disease is explaned in the article. The conection with intima media thickness as atherosclerosis measurement is also explaned.
