The article describes new perspectives in pathophysiology and treatment of atherosclerosis, which still represents the major cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. Endothelial dysfunction, inflammation and oxidative stress are interconnected processes which occur in the atherosclerotic process and enable new preventive and treatment strategies of atherosclerosis.

COBISS.SI-ID: 29295065The functional arterial wall changes are later followed by morphologic changes, such as increased thickness of intima-media and arterial wall stiffness. There is increasing awareness that the central hemodynamics, reflected by central pressure wave forms and arterial stiffness, can provide new and better insight into the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disorders associated with ageing, hypertension, diabetes, etc. Understanding the concept of arterial stiffness, elevated central blood pressure and pulse pressure has given a new view on the mechanisms of target organ damage and their prevention and treatment.

COBISS.SI-ID: 28281049We found that atherogenic diet after 12 weeks induces functional and morphological arterial wall changes in guinea pigs. We demonstrated that atorvastatin and valsartan in low dose act protectively on arterial wall, since in these groups of animals functional and morphological changes, induced by atherogenic diet, were absent.
