Paper published in Journal of Chromatography A describes the results of the research regarding the preparation and characterisation of open porous membranes from copoly(glycidyl methacrylate-ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate). Membranes were prepared from precursor high internal phase emulsions and applied as substrates for functional ion exchange modules for the chromatography of large biomolecules.

A combination of doctor blading and emulsion templating was used to prepare macroporous poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene-co-2-ethylhexylacrylate) and poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) membranes with an interconnected porous structure. Water in oil high internal phase emulsions including monomers in the oil phase were cast onto a glass plate and polymerised at elevated temperature. After purification porous polyHIPE membranes were obtained. The volume ratio of aqueous phase (75 % or 85 %) and the molar ratio of divinylbenzene (2 % or 4 %) were varied, while the addition of chlorobenzene to the oil phase influenced the viscosity of the emulsions. A comonomer, 2-ethylhexylacrylate substantially improved the flexibility of the membranes. All yielding membranes were characterized by measuring their cast thicknesses and flow densities for deionised water. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the morphological features of the membranes.

Recently, a series of new monomers and polymerization mechanisms has been applied to the templating of high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) providing a route to hierarchically porous materials with a range of functionalities and applications. The high degree of control over the pore size is another attractive feature of these materials. Usually, the continuous phase contains monomers, the droplet phase is used to template the large, primary pores, which are interconnected by secondary pores. The addition of nonpolymerizable components to the continuous phase can result in phase separation during polymerization and tertiary pores. Applications include polymer supports for catalysis and synthesis, separation and filtration, cell culture media, enzyme supports, and structural and isolation applications.

By polymerisation of high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs), containing styrene (STY), divinylbenzene (DVB) and methacrylic acid (MAA) in the continuous phase, highly porous polymers including carboxylic functional groups were prepared. The ratio of methacrylic acid to divinylbenzene was varied in order to obtain polyHIPEs with a different degree of crosslinking which influenced a surface area of the polymers, being substantially higher (185 m2/g) with a higher degree of crosslinking (51% DVB) than with a lower degree of crosslinking (24% DVB, 46 m2/g). Up to 90% porous samples were prepared and the optimum hidrophilicity-lipophilicity balance (HLB) of the surfactant was found to be around 4.8-4.9. Both thermal and photo initiation were used to induce polymerisation. The resulting polymers had an open cellular morphology with cavity diameters between 21.8 lm and 44.2 lm and with interconnecting pores between 2.2 lm and 5.0 lm. Monolithic supports were used for further functionalisation with thionyl chloride and multifunctional amines.
