The article deals with the census and the identification of people by nation and language, in the area of the Slovenian-Croatian border and ethnically mixed areas of the inner Istrian peninsula, since 1880 until the establishment of the WTO territory. The author discusses the effects (ecclesiastical, economic, administrative, educational, etc.), which influenced people in establishing their own identity in ethnically mixed areas. The presence of the Italian-speaking population in a narrow zone in the interior of the Istrian peninsula affected the choice of the spoken language (and, consequently, of the national identity) of individuals in the Austrian census from the end of 19th century.

Analysis of the old parish registers due to lower management, smaller amounts of data, errors, inconsistencies and shortcomings brings many methodological obstacles. These circumstances make it difficult to identify individuals and thus reconstruct the demographic history of the selected area - parishes. The article, based on the case of birth register books outlines the circumstances which hinder the identification of individuals, i.e. the reconstruction of their cradle-to-grave demographic history, on which the method of family reconstruction depends.
