The paper treats migration transition and transforming of the modes of geographic mobility and migratory typologies of the preindustrial era into particular forms of migration of the 19th cent. Following the analysis of migration in the countryside and in towns, the non-consistency of the thesis of a static society in the modern ages in contrast to the high level of population mobility in contemporaneity, has been confirmed. The emphasis was put on the role of mobility in socio-economic dynamics and structures of the modern age, both in urban and rural areas of the western part of Slovenia.

The paper deals with demographical changes of the Koper town and its countryside in the 18th century, with a special emphasis on natural growth of population and migratory dynamics. Basic documentation and sources are presented, together with the methodological approaches for studying natural and migratory trends; besides, the traditional marriage relations and patronymics (which appear the most efficient indicator of dynamic and geographical characteristics of the migratory flows) are presented.
