Confraternities were an important part of life; at the same time, they represented a link between rural and urban cultures in north-west Istria. In addition to the religious dimension, an important element of becoming a member of such confraternities was advancing the social and economic interests of both individuals and certain social groups. The confraternities made the lives of their members easier by lending them money, giving them land to lease, offering them the opportunity to provide services to the confraternity and finding them other temporary work. This also affected the economic development of rural and urban areas. The number of confraternities increased steadily in the Koper area until the 18th century. Some kind of overview statement concerning them was made in the spring of 1580 by the Apostolic visitor Agostin Valieri, while their revenue was also precisely documented at a later date by the Koper Podesta and Captains Lorenzo Donato (1675) and Paulo Condulmier (1741) and the auditor Antonio Solveni (1797).

The paper is a representation of the general features of the development of the population of the town of Koper from the 1890's to the period before the First World War. Unlike previous analyses of Koper demographics of that period, this one is based on the corrected census data and vital statistics from church registers, which excludes prisoners, stillborn babies and some other segments of the population that at certain times distorted the actual dynamic and structural characteristics of Koper demographics. The stages of growth, which included occasional standstills and setbacks, as well as natural and social factors of development are described. The former show a typical pre-industrial demographic regime at least until the middle of the century, however, in the seventies the demographic transition begins.

The structural-genetic study of demographic processes is limited by the availability and quality of register books, as those from previous periods were generally poorly preserved and managed. But even the most carefully kept record books contain errors, inconsistencies and shortcomings, which sometimes render the family reconstruction method impossible. In present contibution will be shown the difficuties by indentification of individuals and their demographic history from birth until dead. However, the methods and characteristics of the records in the register books have both substantive and methodological value.

The paper deals with demographical changes of the Koper town and its countryside in the 18th century, with a special emphasis on natural growth of population and migratory dynamics. Basic documentation and sources are presented, together with the methodological approaches for studying natural and migratory trends; besides, the traditional marriage relations and patronymics (which appear the most efficient indicator of dynamic and geographical characteristics of the migratory flows) are presented.

The Monograph entitled Slovensko-hrvaško sosedstvo brings together some interdisciplinary scientific views of Slovenian and Croatian scholars, dealing with history, geography, ethnology and anthropology regarding the history of Slovene-Croatian border and the current situation in the border area. The main concerns of the book are the historical review of the formation of Slovene-Croatian border from its origins, mostly using examples from Istria, and the changes in everyday life of the border-area population – especially after 1990 – as a consequence of this border formation.
