This article analyzes the social experience of a culture of shortages, the symbolic value and public meaning of goods, and different practices in the acquisition of material artifacts. It explores the system of interaction between border officials and shoppers/smugglers, the traumatic border-crossing experiences of facing customs officers as personalized power, gender divisions, ethnic and class differentiation involved in the shopping expedition, and feelings of foreignness, shame and inadequacy when faced with the ‘West’ in Trieste.

The paper focuses on the reflection of socialist values and ideologies in everyday cooking practices. The findings are based on a qualitative analysis of texts from the Slovenian communist women's and family monthly Naša žena (‘Our Woman’) in the period from 1949 to 1990. The article treats the selected texts – recipe and food columns and practical suggestions for housekeeping and cooking – as the reflection of socialist values, ideas and ideals.
